Shapingwhat comes next

Fall 2026

Dear Friends,

Every great story has moments that shape what comes next. This is one of those moments for Ronald McDonald House San Diego.

Because of the generosity of our community, more families can stay together under our roof than ever before. With 82 guest suites now welcoming families each night and Family Support Services taking shape, we are expanding both our capacity and our care for children and families facing medical crises.

This year also marks an important leadership transition. After 16 years as president and CEO, Chuck Day has retired. Under his leadership, the House grew significantly, strengthened its foundation, and prepared for the future. His impact will be felt by families for generations to come.

At the same time, we are pleased to welcome Alex Loker as president and CEO. Alex brings deep experience serving children and families, a commitment to family-centered care, and a clear passion for our mission. I am confident Ronald McDonald House San Diego is well positioned for its next chapter under her leadership.

The pages that follow tell stories of resilience, generosity, and hope. They are stories of families staying together, supporters stepping forward, and a community coming together to make difficult journeys a little easier.

Most importantly, they are stories made possible by you.

Thank you for being part of our story and for supporting families when they need it most.

With gratitude,

A message from our new president and CEO

Inspiredby families

Dear Friends of San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House,

When I first learned about our House years ago, what struck me wasn’t the building. It was the families. Families like Jimmy’s, in the story that follows. Their resilience, determination, and love for one another remind us why this mission matters.

Throughout my career, I have seen how much children depend on the people who love them. Parents comfort, advocate, ask questions, and make difficult decisions. They are an essential part of their child’s care.

A medical crisis may begin with one child, but it affects an entire family.

That simple truth is at the heart of Ronald McDonald House San Diego. By helping families stay close to their child, close to care, and close to one another, we help them focus on what matters most during an incredibly difficult time.

As a fourth-generation San Diegan, I am honored to lead an organization that reflects the very best of our community’s compassion and generosity. I am excited about the future, from expanding Family Support Services to strengthening the partnerships that help families feel supported every step of the way.

Most of all, I look forward to joining the families, supporters, volunteers, and staff who continue these stories every day.

Thank you for the warm welcome and for believing, as I do, that families are stronger when they stay together.

Warmly,

Alex LokerPresident and CEO

Staying togetherfor Jimmy

For the Yepiz family, Ronald McDonald House San Diego will always be more than a place to stay. It’s where they stayed together.

When Jimmy was born more than three months early, Alexandrea and Jose faced fear, uncertainty, and impossible choices. Home was nearly two hours from the hospital, and they couldn’t be in two places at once: at Jimmy’s bedside and with their three daughters.

Then a room became available at Ronald McDonald House San Diego.

The House became home for the entire family while Jimmy received specialized care. Jimmy spent 105 days in the NICU and underwent 11 surgeries.

Yet between hospital visits, family life continued.

Jose and Alexandrea could gather with their children at the dinner table, celebrate milestones, and hold onto the everyday routines of family life. Their youngest daughter took her first steps. Their oldest entered kindergarten at the House’s on-site school.

Looking back, Alexandrea remembers finding hope in simple acts of kindness. Every warm meal, smile, and thoughtful gesture reminded her family they were not alone.

Today, Jimmy is thriving and developing right on track. The family returned to the House this summer to celebrate how far they’ve come and share their story with others.

Jose and Alexandrea smile as they help their toddler son Jimmy stand at a play area at the House.

Today when I look at my son, I don’t just see the baby who overcame impossible odds. I see every person who stood beside our family and made that journey a little less overwhelming.”

A place to stay closeduring the day

The Ron & Alexis Fowler Family Care Center

The Fowler Family Care Center serves as a daytime home base for families caring for a seriously ill child. Whether coming from a night at the hospital or navigating a full day of appointments and procedures, families have a place to regroup and recharge while remaining just steps from their child’s care.

This spring, Ronald McDonald House San Diego named our Family Care Center in honor of Ron and Alexis Fowler, recognizing their extraordinary commitment to strengthening the House’s mission and expanding support for caregivers and families navigating a child’s medical journey.

A visionthat endures

What began with six families determined to create something better has grown into a community of care for thousands of families each year.

1980 construction of our original Ronald McDonald House, now our North House

Fifty years ago, after experiencing the loss of a child to cancer, six families joined pediatric oncologist Dr. Donald B. Schwartz and hospital social worker Irma Gusfield to create something better for families facing childhood illness.

Together, they formed San Diegans Against Childhood Cancer, led by parent Peter Hallisay, and helped establish Ronald McDonald House San Diego, ensuring families had a place to stay near their child’s care.

Today, the House looks very different than it did in 1980. What began as a place to stay has expanded to include meals, education, and Family Support Services that support the entire family during a child’s medical crisis.

Yet the reason it exists remains unchanged: helping families stay together when they need each other most.

There was no place for parents to stay. That was the whole problem, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Families needed to be close to their kids. That need is what started everything.”

A lastingimpact

Sixteen years of growth, service, and stewardship

Being a part of this great organization has been the honor of my life. Thank you to our community, and to our donors, volunteers, and staff for all that we accomplished together.”

– Chuck Day, President and CEO, 2010-2026
Portrait of Chuck Day, smiling.

When Chuck Day joined Ronald McDonald House San Diego in 2010, he understood the importance of keeping families close to their child during a health crisis. He was committed to ensuring that families would continue to find comfort, support, and a welcoming place to stay, not only in the moment, but for years to come.

Over the next 16 years, his vision helped shape Ronald McDonald House San Diego. Under Chuck’s leadership, the House increased access to lodging and meals, created new ways for the community to support families, and launched the Imagine the Moment expansion campaign.

Leading with heart

Along the way, Chuck became a familiar and encouraging presence for countless children and families, never losing sight of the people at the heart of the mission.

Those who know Chuck know that no task was beneath him. If a rain puddle needed clearing, he’d grab a broom. He brought that same dedication and genuine care to every interaction, ensuring employees, volunteers, donors, and families felt valued and appreciated.

Today, Chuck’s impact lives on in every family welcomed through our doors and in the stronger organization he helped prepare for the future.

Supporting familiesin new ways

The Imagine the Moment campaign is helping Ronald McDonald House San Diego provide more comprehensive care than ever before. After expanding the House to 82 guest suites, campaign supporters are making Family Support Services possible, helping parents, siblings, and caregivers access the support, resources, and connections they need throughout their medical journey.

Led by founding director Lisa Castagnola, LCSW, Family Support Services helps families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments with greater support and confidence.

A smiling mother leans close to her young son as they play together.

Family Support Services grows from a simple belief: caring for a child means supporting the whole family.

  • Social work support and crisis response
  • Graduate social work internships
  • Emotional wellness programs
  • Sibling support and activities
  • Therapeutic resources
  • Transition home support
  • Follow-up care and bereavement support

Our endowments strengthen care today and ensure support for tomorrow’s families.

Families who will arrive at Ronald McDonald House San Diego in the years ahead will need comfort, care, and support, just as families do today. As part of the Imagine the Moment campaign, we are strengthening our endowment to help ensure the House remains a source of support, connection, and hope for generations of families.

A lasting investment in families

The Joseph Clayes III Charitable Trust holds a unique focus on establishing endowment funds for well-managed nonprofit organizations that demonstrate strong leadership, sound stewardship, and lasting community impact. Through gifts in 2012 and 2019 totaling more than $4 million, co-trustees Trulette Clayes and Brendan Holmes made a transformative investment in Ronald McDonald House San Diego’s endowment. Today, those endowed funds continue to support family care while growing in value, helping to ensure our House can serve families for years to come.

Meals from the Heart

Meals from the Heart brings people together three times daily, every day of the year. Families gather around the table while volunteers help create a warm, welcoming experience. Generous community support makes these moments possible.

La-Z-Boy volunteers served meals twice this year, while the company continued its longstanding support through furniture donations, including comfortable seating for our new guest suites.

A lasting contribution

Brian Cahill concluded his board service after years of exceptional leadership and commitment to San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House. A past board chair, he helped guide the organization’s growth and, earlier in his career, led the Balfour Beatty team that built our current House. He also chaired the Golf Invitational Committee for nearly two decades, helping make it one of the House’s most successful fundraising events. Together with his wife, Robin, Brian continues to support the mission through service on the Philanthropy Committee and through a guest suite named in honor of his parents.
